A Manny Pacquiao fight is off the table, but hopes for PBC, Top Rank collaboration

“Leave Pacquiao alone, he’s an old man,” Arum said when talking to press the week of Terrance Crawford’s fight against Egidijus Kavaliauskas.

Egidijus Kavaliauskas. Say that 5 times fast.

Terrance Crawford, one of the pound for pound best boxers today, spent years in the shadows of Manny Pacquiao while they were both under the Top Rank banner.  This definitely hurt Crawford’s ability to grow star power with the public, but such is boxing promotion.

Putting all his accolades aside, Crawford is still missing is a marquee victory against a household name.

While not wanting to talk about future opponents leading up to the Kavaliauskas fight, now that he’s done and dusted with that, he’s ready to talk about his hopes for the future.

A PBC and Top Rank meeting is what the welterweight division and the spirit of boxing need right now.  Rumors are flying and we may finally see a Top Rank/PBC collaboration and consolidation of the title belts at this weight class.

In a potential Terrance Crawford vs Shawn Porter fight, I think Crawford takes care of Porter handily.  After this fight people will realize how lucky Shawn Porter was to have had the time he did with that precious green WBC belt when he was still siloed from PBC stablemate Errol Spence Jr and (still currently) kept from doing business with a Top Rank’s Bud Crawford.

Boxing isn’t always a free market, and if it were right now, there would be one champion at welterweight right now.  Here’s to hoping for a change at giving the world an Undisputed Welterweight World Champion.

With Errol Spence Jr, there are still question marks.

Truth be told I’m a pro Bud Crawford guy above all else, but especially before the unfortunate (well maybe fortunate, considering his health) car accident Errol Spence Jr suffered this year, I still had some reservations with him against Spence.  And the second question mark comes from Spence side of things after recent developments.

Will we see a unified division in 2020?  I sure hope so.

Will we see some money fights for Crawford and a chance to cross the isle to PBC turf, well Top Rank’s Bob Arum seems to have hinted at it a bit.  Let’s hope things go well with the Tyson Fury, remember he’s a Top Rank guy now, and Deontay Wilder rematch.  Maybe this will be the start of some good things for PBC-Top Rank relations in 2020.
