sup 2019?

it’s friday again can you believe it?  that means it’s time for the Boxing TL;DR newsletter.

Yes, that felt like the Sundayest Tuesday ever, but here we are.
Yes, on December 31st Floyd Mayweather put on that exhibition fight in Japan with the Japanese star kick boxer…
No story really here folks, some will try to make a lot of noise about this.  Truth is it doesn’t matter.  People will come at him one way or another and try to criticize him for taking the exhibition with and knocking out the smaller kickboxing star.    But take a deep breath.  This was about the $9 million Floyd was able to make on a chill off day of work and nothing else.  It’s fine.  “oh but look he knocked out a smaller guy, wow”  Let me ask you, would you have been happier, or would the fans in Japan have been happier to see him out point him?  This game is about monetizing sensationalism.  This must have been a sell-able event in that market.  They did just that.
I think this meme summarized it best.
No Major Cards being broadcast this weekend 😭
On January 11th, if you’re privileged enough to have Showtime 😜, pause your hoity toity podcast playing over your AirPods and catch this

Jan. 11: Shreveport, La. (Showtime)

  • Devin Haney vs. Xolisani Ndongeni, 10 rounds, lightweights
  • Ruben Villa vs. Ruben Cervera, 8 rounds, featherweights
  • Frank Sanchez Faure vs. Willie Jake Jr., 8 rounds, heavyweights
Catch a glimpse of Ruben Villa, who should be scheduled to be co-main in this nationally broadcast card.  He is trained by my former coach and this kid is for real.  You should know the name, even if you’re like the rest of us and don’t have #premiumchannels like Showtime.
But the Next BIG fight weekend is Jan 18.  Too many cards competing for our attention really.   Why do they do this!!
I’ll be sure to cover later, but we have a Manny Pacquiao vs Adrien Broner fight on Showtime PPV,  a fairly stacked DAZN show (“the people’s app”, $9 a month feels good against a 6o-ish dollar PPV card).  Also on the same night will be a ESPN+/Top Rank event that will feature Shakur Stevenson and Bryant Jennings.
So a couple of fairly dry weeks in the boxing world and then BOOM, a lot all at once. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
While I have you… Last week I asked you to send in your favorite boxing moments of 2018.  While I got a lot of email reads (opens), I got absolute crickets on the inbox reply front…
This themes with what a lot of people have been telling me recently… “People don’t interact with text”  “could you make a podcast”  “videos while I’m bugging my Naval Academy bunk-mate and ‘doing homework’ will be totally something I’d be into”
I know you’ve wanted this.  I’ve wanted to do it too.  Now that I got this sweet internet connection, this home office (podcast studio), I want you to know that all of that is coming to Boxing TL;DR in 2019 😁.
Thanks for reading.  See you in your inbox next week!
